A Brief History
It all started with a phone line and an answering machine back in 1992 by a couple of guys looking to entertain the masses in the great state of Utah. While listening to the audio streams, you'll notice several references to Salt Lake City, Utah which is the land of caffeine-free Coke, Jell-O salads, and Mormons. Now, what better way to skirt the mainstream way of life behind the Zion curtain than with a "virtual audio corkboard" of sorts. The Darker Side became a way to get the word out that life beyond the L.D.S. Church was a mere phone call away. It would never have been possible without the help and support from these fine folks: Clint Dimick (Dimitri Baughman) - Founder, Tim Pehrson (aka Wally Clinkenpeel) - Co-founder, Wade Kirkpatrick (aka Ned Flanders) - Co-founder, Mike Millen (aka Mike the Janitor), and Laurie Lohman (aka Chloe Devereaux) And of course, all the original callers to Salt Lake's "Darker Side" line. Without them, most of this noise wouldn't have been possible. By 1993, the main "phone jockies" running The Darker Side were Clint, Mike and Clint's girlfriend, Laurie. Mike had filled in the spot of Wade when he stepped aside to pursue life in the private sector. The way Mike found out about the Darker Side was from a listener who called into his radio show on Hot 94.9 KZHT. Mike started calling the Darker Side and became a regular character on the service. Soon after, Mike met Clint and Wade and took over the role as one of the hosts. Eventually, The Darker Side was shut down due to poor support by callers and complete burnout by the hosts. Not too mention that Clint was pouring quite a bit of money into a project that had no return. For a brief period of time during the final days of The Darker Side, Clint had started up a pirate radio station on 89.5 FM that actually got some press coverage in the local rag, "Private Eye Weekly" (later to be known as City Weekly). That, too, was shut down due to some threats from individuals claiming they would report the crew running 89.5 to the F.C.C. In 1994, The Darker Side was reborn. After a few months of going their own ways, Clint and Mike got back together to make a new version of an old classic. The second coming of The Darker Side would only last a few months and was shut down, once again, never to return.
The return of The Darker Side on WildVoice.com
Under the direction of resident Wildvoice.com podcaster (and former Darker Side phone jockey, Mike The Janitor) and Darker Side founder, Clint Dimick (Dimitri Baughman), the archives of The Darker Side are being made available for your listening pleasure here on WildVoice. These shows are in their entirety as they played on The Darker Side answering machine from 1992-1994. You'll hear original material created by the main characters as well as the phone callers themselves. There is even talk that there might be a return of The Darker Side via specialized podcasts here on WildVoice. But let's give you an idea of how it all started first by letting you listen in on over 60 mixes of the original Darker Side. Enjoy!
