PODCAST TRANSCRIPT Welcome to the final summary weave for the podcasting collaboratory. I'm Melissa Smith. This weave was written and compiled by Tamara Wupper and Meg Williams

Podcasting and Video Streaming Summary of Main Discussion Points

Thank you to everyone who has been involved in the podcasting and video streaming group discussion. Over the past two weeks we have had a massive 134 postings and have covered a wide range of topics from the technology itself, the impact, role and relationship in society covering regulation, rating and censorship of pod casts, through to its use in the academic world to the implications of the format becoming obsolete.

We thought is would be valuable to summarise some of the main points of discussion.

Podcasting and Video Streaming Technology

The development of the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) file format made podcasting possible. Whilst RSS was not originally built for this intent, what it did allow was for Software pioneer Dave Winer to adapt RSS software to handle audio files (Biever, 2005). This development was critical to inspiring Adam Curry, a former MTV video–jockey, to create podcasting software. With podcasting technology available, audio content was now easily distributed and located. This created an explosion in the popularity of podcasting (Affleck, 2005)

Video streaming sends audio and/or video files as a series of small data packets, which can then be viewed through the use of a video player. Video streaming is different to downloading content from the Internet because the user can begin viewing a file instantaneously, once they are connected to the server (Redden 2005)

Access to Technology

The group examined how podcasting had the potential to reach a global audience which inturn opened up discussions on the digital divide and access to technology. The group reflected on their own access and relationship with technology, which for those without broadband was a frustrating experience. It brought to life the digital divide debate and how wide the gap is between both first world and third world countries.

Censorship, Copyright and Regulations

There were two lively debates on this topic on both pod casts and video streaming technologies. In Australia Podcasting is not subject to any censorship or regulation laws. The group discussed the implications this had on society. Whilst there was a vast range of opinions, the general consensus was there needed to be some sort of regulation or standards set. The group also examined the implication of copyright laws across this new format and the impact this may have on the record industry.

Censorship was also discussed in relation to video streaming products and the popularity of sites such as You Tube. Numerous content examples were highlighted from innocent satirical based home videos through to graphic war based propaganda videos. It forced the group to debate and examine the concept of people’s freedom of choice and being able to access information and the cost implications to society.

 Podcasting and it’s many uses

The most popular discussion topic was Podcasting being used in the education system. The group examined how the technology of pod casting is being used as a new learning channel and the benefits and weaknesses associated with this. The group examined podcasting being used in universities, regional and remote schools along with primary schools. It was clear it was topic close to heart as there were a lot of opinions and debates.

The general group consensus seemed to be that whilst there is merit in using Pod casts as an education tool, it was agreed that pod casting should be used where possible in “combination” with the face to face teaching and not as a replacement as they lack an interactive dimension at both university and primary school levels.

As well as in the Education sector, podcasting has become increasingly utilised in the Medical profession. Documenting various surgeries, audio journal articles and research papers have all been justified to help aid medical practitioners to share knowledge and constantly keep him or herself updated. Videostreaming is also popular when referring on patients, or in consultation with a physician to overcome any distance.

The use of Podcasting and videostreaming in professional occupations is one way that such a technology is able to connect a great number of people based on interests rather than geographical or genetic associations.

Time shifting and mobility

The group also examined the concept of mobility and Crofts concept of ‘time shifting’. The general consensus was people liked the idea of choice and being able to view content when and where they wanted but debate was strong on who actually has time and was actually doing this?

This topic also examined the concept of podcasting and video streaming being used as a replacement medium for more traditional mediums such as free to air television.

Technology and Format Obsolescence

After having examined the technology of podcasting and videostreaming, it’s role and relationship with society the final chapter in our discussion related around the topic both these technologies becoming obsolete and the impact this can have on society. Reflecting on previous technologies that have been or are in the midst of being outdated emphasises the need for technologies to enhance at an exponential rate. It is a matter of time before podcasting and video streaming become a thing of the past. What will take it over?

Making a Podcast

Podcasting and videostreaming are becoming cheaper and easier to produce and launch online.

However the process of making a podcast brought about recognition of some of the limitations these two technologies have. Not only on the hearing impaired but those without access to sound on their computers or to a portable MP3 player. These limitations restrict the community that is thought to have connected the world by marginalising those certain individuals that are affected.

The Independence of podcasting and videostreaming is one of the reasons this technology has become so popular. The countless uses and content that is put online everyday not only depicts societies interests but also enables a element of ‘information truth’ to evolve.

Podcast, videostreaming and Social Informatics

It is important to note that the development of RSS did not posses the initial intention of podcasting and videostreaming. Social interpretation of this technology brought about the uses that have been discussed. Technologies do not have characteristics until society dictates them. (Sawyer et al 2002)

Prior to podcasting and videostreaming computer-supported social networks, or computer mediated communication depended heavily on text-based interactions. More and more this is being dominated and replaced by graphics, images, and recordings with the effect of increasing social presence. (Wellman et al 1996) The social networks that have resulted out the way in which podcasting and videostreaming have been utilised overcome many obstacles that have in the past hindered a person’s ability, for example literacy levels, distance and time.
